TIPS ON HIRING YOUR DJ

Most customers who need a DJ ask the same questions: What do you charge, and what type of music do you play? These tips will guide you through the most overlooked aspects regarding professional DJs

SALES AND DISCOUNTS … YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

We are having a sale that ends this Friday! Sound familiar? Are you being asked to pay in full up front to take “advantage” of this “great offer”? What you won’t be told is that there will be another “sale” next week. This forces you into a quick, uninformed decision by unethical pressure tactics. The reason their rates are really lower, is because they book high volume, and pay their DJs less than other companies since they do not hire professionals, and send out inexperienced DJs!

EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE EXPERIENCE

Do not risk hiring an inexperienced DJ just to save a few dollars. Usually, the cheapest means you will get an inexperienced DJ! A polished professional can calmly deal with the nervous family member, or a crowd that just won’t dance, while keeping the event enjoyable. Make sure the DJ Will be experienced at YOUR type of event. Weddings and corporate events are very different from the club or high school DJ! Also, don’t be afraid to ask for references.

YOUR CHOICE OF PERSONALITY

Some events require a heavy interaction, while others like to have a DJ that will just remain in the background. Most prefer someone in between or – a moderate personality (also described as a master of ceremonies). The type of personality should be your choice. The best thing to do is tell the company what you want (in writing), then let them schedule the DJ best suited for you – after all, they know all the strengths and weaknesses of their own DJs. Then talk to your assigned DJ as your special day gets closer. Watch out for words like “fun” and “good”- these are very subjective and you may have a different definition of each. Always be as specific as possible regarding what you want.

THE DJ FACTORY – DO YOU WANT TO BE JUST ANOTHER NUMBER?

Some companies will boast of having hundreds of DJs! You may not get much personal attention, and these companies have very little quality control. Their “intense training” will consist of having the trainee memorize a script, then asking them how soon they can begin working! Their focus is so much on quantity, and not quality; that they are more concerned about booking as many shows as possible, and hiring DJs to fill the slots even if they are not qualified.

THE “BEST” DJs

Why would anyone EVER want anything less than the company’s “best” DJ? Be very cautious of DJ services who package their DJs as “SUPERB” or “DELUXE”. Subjectively classifying some DJs as better or “more popular” than others is simply a tactic to have you pay more money for those DJs. Don’t be suckered into a preselected “SUPERB” DJ, because the company’s idea of “good” may be drastically different than yours. Conversely, if only a handful of their DJs are labeled as “SUPERB”, just what does that really say about the remaining ones? To avoid a bait and switch – get these names in advance and specific references for those DJs.

RELIABLE FULL-TIME COMPANY

Just because a DJ advertises in the yellow pages or is a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, does not necessarily mean they are well established. Most DJs start out as a 1 person “company”. Then after several years in business, they expand and hire other DJs. DJ companies come and go every year!
